Three times ?
Message from sheepishly posted on 14-08-2010 at 17:58:54 (D | E | F)
Hello,
I wonder if whether there would be another word to say 'three times' like "once" or "twice".
My teacher told us about it once, but I can't remember the right word.
Maybe it doesn't exist... Oups... Ha, ha...
Could you help me and answer my question with 'yes...' or 'no...'

Hello,
"Thrice" means "three times" but, contrary to "once" or "twice", is not used in common language anymore. It's just archaic ! Now, even if you won't use the word, you've got to know it and understand it if you come upon "thrice" in an old text !
Hope this helps.

Hello!
Journalists sometimes use the word "thrice". I read it in "The Daily Telegraph" not so long ago, which does not mean that you should use it!
You can read the word "thrice" twice in Antony's funeral oration over Caesar's body :
"Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears!"

Hello,
Thank you. I almost ask you when that world was used, but you answer before I ask my question !! (I was going to ask you for examples in which the word was used but you anticipated my request!)
Thanks for the links...

I think the word thrice is not used in our daily conversation any more...as in our informal chat one can use the word (three times)...it's ok for informal talk but what about formal one??... I think thrice is better than three times..for formal chat..!!

Hello!

I think thrice is better than three times..for formal chat..!!

Only if you want people to think you are a wizard. It would be seen as an affectation or at least an allusion (NB: not an illusion) to archaic speech.
