Is it right?(Grammar)
Message from lillian7 posted on 19-02-2011 at 09:58:08
Hello.
Please,
Loudspeakers were fixed in the hall so that everyone ______ have an opportunity to hear the speech.
Can we use might, could or should to fill the blank?
If 'yes', why?
It is an adverbial clause led by 'so that' and the main clause is in past tense, so it's fixed that we use 'might','could' or 'should'. Is it right?
Seeking for help. Thank you.

Hello,
Loudspeakers were fixed in the hall so that everyone _could_have an opportunity to hear the speech.
Can we use might, could or should to fill the blank?
Simply could is used here to express abillity. It means that everyone is able to hear the speech.

Hello,
I agree with the answer that "could" should be used here, because it means ability and attempt.
