Position of comparative/ adjective
Message from valoris posted on 23-10-2019 at 11:43:53 (D | E | F)
Hello everybody!
In an exercise First certificate Exam format I have found the following “key word transformation” (students have to complete the second sentence so that it has a similar meaning to the first sentence, using the word given, which cannot be changed, and they must use between two and five words).
Mary is the best guitarist I know. THAN
Mary is a ____________________________________ else I know.

The only solution proposed by the authors is the following:
A)Mary is a BETTER GUITARIST THAN ANYONE / ANYBODY / EVERYONE / EVERYBODY else I know.

Some students completed the sentence writing
B)Mary is a GUITARIST BETTER THAN ANYONE / ANYBODY / EVERYONE / EVERYBODY else I know.

Can you please help me understand if both A and B are correct?
Thank you so much!

Hello

B is wrong, even in the comparative adjectives come before nouns: better guitarist, NOT guitarist better.

Thank you!
Anyway, if I can say "Mary is a guitarist who is better than anyone else I know", some students might consider "Mary is a guitarist better than..." as a reduced relative clauses. What could I reply? Thank You!

Hello, in my opinion both sentences are correct, with any of the four options (but I would most naturally say "anyone").
See you.
