Cultural Appropriation /2
Message de bvert posté le 10-01-2021 à 00:37:29 (S | E | F)
Bonsoir,
pourriez vous me corriger ma 1re partie s'il vous plait? C'est long mais j'ai essayé de faire peu d'erreurs.
Merci d'avance.

First of all, we'll understand why cultural appropriation is still a delicate and hurtful topic. In fact, cultural appropriation begins with a fragile history. The traditions of the marginalized cultures are seen by the dominant culture as a form of exoticism, originality, and novelty. Historically, we consider cultural appropriation as product of imperialism. The aim is to extend their power to gain political and economic control of other areas. imperialism creates an unequal cultural based on the domination of the dominant culture. They reject the values of the colonized people and territories. Moreover, we consider cultural appropriation as a product of capitalism because there are diverse cultural identities abolished or oppressed and only one culture left to identify with is capitalist culture. That’s why we can also talk about “assimilation”. It’s the result of the colonisation and it means, the culture dominated is substitute by the dominant culture. Additionally, this assimilation happens when these different cultures become indistinguishable. Appropriating a culture is a form of accepting the marginalization of cultures. For example, in Australia, white Australian businesses where making money by using the appropriation of a culture oppressed. If fact, they use their Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artworks on T-shirts and souvenirs without mentioning and benefiting the reals creators.
Another intemporal example of appropriation is the religious appropriation. The problem is that religion became a fashion statement or a trend with money-making. So, the signification of the religious beliefs, the traditions or the religious symbols are ignored and rejected. For examples, the figure of Buddha lost his first signification which is spiritualty and became a fashion accessory or interior design. This figure is also represented in T-shirts reducing the figure to namaste quotes and “good vibes” slogans. Moreover, the religious symbols like the Ying Yang, the evil eye, the hamsa or the rosaries are often used in fashion or sold in stores. Mostly, people wear it because it’s a trend and because it’s aesthetically pleasing. The symbols of Rosaries are the religious objects most used by celebrities. Famous pop singers wear it Lady Gaga or Madonna. They wear Catholic rosaries as a fashion trend during fashion show or during their concerts. These pop stars aren’t actually Catholic. The problematic is that the absence of knowledge towards religion can be seen as an insult and disrespect toward the adherents because they destroy the spiritual and religious signification. In other words, they use religious symbols just like a pretty accessory when in actuality, some believers pray and meditate with their symbol.
So, there is a form of appropriation and what is paradoxical is that this pop stars figures declare publicly their critics towards religions. In a way, they disrespect these religions by criticize and by using their symbols. That’s why it creates anger and frustration from believers. They need ore consideration. Finally, a celebrity in an influencer who has a big impact on his followers this is why using religion and its symbols without the meaning produces the cultural appropriation.
We also have examples of cultural appropriation never-ending. Blackface is one of them, it’s a subject that reflects oppression and racism. First, blackface is the use of makeup by a nonblack person to appear black. The practice begins in the 17century. Actors played to imitate Black Americans. Furthermore, actors use make-up to make their features comically large. The aim is to create an exaggeration to mock black features. Also, actors give to the public a negative vision of black characters by portraying them as inferior and criminals in nature. It permits them to laugh on a minority dehumanized and they reinforce the negative stereotypes. Nowadays, some people are dressed in blackface during Halloween which is completely inappropriate. The problem is the fact that they are dress up in a costume that is representative of another culture. Dress up by darkening one’s face and wearing ethnic garb is for provoking laughter. So, it’s inappropriate and offensive because we don’t show respect for a person like this.
