A Room with a view is a novel of the English writer Edward Morgan Forster in 1908. At this time, the life of the girls in England was much oppressed. This book denounced and ribbed the English society of this century with Mrs. Bartlett, Miss Lavish, Cecil and deals with the forbidden love between two people of different social background as Lucy and George. And the difference of behavior, valor, and ethics between the middle class and the upper class like between Mrs. Bartlett and the Emerson’s.
Firstly, we will deal with the conflict between social convention and love. Then, we will speak about the impact of the travel in the behavior’s changing. At last the difference of behavior between the two class and the manner which the author treated this situation with humor.
In the first place, in this book we could observe a conflict between social convention and love. Mrs. Bartlett, who strictly adhered to the conventional behavior and value, had the responsibility of Lucy. She protected her all along the time and she would organize all the movements of Lucy. As we can see, at the beginning of the story when she refused the room of Mr. Emerson because she was fear of an indebt. Or when she didn’t want gave the room’s George or leaved her alone with Miss Lavish. Thanks to the part of liberty and independence which Charlotte has given to Lucy, she could be grow up and discovered the life, love and found a man who loves her. She was able to make her own choice. At the beginning Charlotte was against the relationship between Lucy and George but with time she allowed them because she wanted Lucy’s happiness. Charlotte played a real important role on the purpose of the forbidden love. She supported hidden this love between Lucy and George. The love wans against the social convention.
Secondly, the important changing thanks to this travel. After university, Forster travelled in Continental Europe while he wrote novels and after he travelled in India. Travel had a great importance in his lifetime. In the book, throughout the stay in Florence, we could see that Charlotte gave more independence to Lucy. It is from this moment that Lucy could enjoy of her stay in Italy, adventured, visited, discovered itself, and knew better George. She socialized with people from other class. Italy changed her. The most important events which confirmed her gain of freedom and at the same time her loss of protection from the real life were the murder in the Piazza which she was witness. We can observe a real evolution of Lucy’s behavior; Italy had acted on her at the right way. Italy changed Georges too; he wanted to live really, not as before her coming in Florence, may be thanks of the meet of Lucy.
Finally, Forster got ridiculous the English society, with their valor, ethics, behavior. The traditional characters, Mrs. Honeychurch, Cecil and Mrs. Bartlett were considered like traditional, uncreative people were represented all along the book inside room. Contrary to the Emersons, Lucy, Freddy were represented often outside, to signified open minded, imagination, changing attitudes and behavior. Differences were illustrated by several situations, for example the importance of having a view, the embarrassment of Charlotte with the mention of the bathe, the annoying tea party, when Lucy explained the two kinds of cad at Charlotte and when Cecil didn’t want to play tennis.
Forster compared England to Italy and admired this land for his freedom and sexual expression. Lucy had changed of perspective of herself in Italy; she became a self-assured and independent woman. He was also concerned by the forbidden love because Forster was gay. In this novel, Forster was able to denounce the narrow-minded of English society in the 20th Century by mixing his personal history including travel and forbidden love.
