Help/plural or singular
Message from passenger75 posted on 12-08-2013 at 09:44:58 (D | E | F)
Hello,

Would you please help me with my problem?
This is my question: Which form of the verb do we use with words that are superficially singular but imply a group(such as name of soccer clubs or name of countries etc.)?
I came across this term somewhere: Real Madrid go in front.
Is the term above correct? If yes, with which words do we use in singular and which ones in plural?
Thank you in advance.
Have a nice time.

Hello Passenger75!
The "Real Madrid" being a team of several players, the verb should be in the plural form.
Same thing when talking about the police, or people: "the police have arrested...", "the people are pleased..."
As for countries, the verb should be in the singular form: "Morocco is a beautiful country", England is part of Great Britain", etc ...
But: "The USA are composed of 50 States" (plural form for the verb).
Have a nice day!

Hello!

"Family" and other "collective nouns" can be followed by a singular or a plural verb, depending on what you are talking about...
See you!
