Hello !

I never know when to use the correct sentence.
ex : It's difficult to make out what he says
It's difficult to figure out what he says
It's difficult to work out what he says
It's difficult to understand what he says
What is the subtlety between those verbs ?

Hello

It's difficult to decipher (make out) what he says ( it's confused, therefore one does not understand well)
It's difficult to find a solution or think of a solution (figure out )
it's difficult to manage to understand (to work out), from a practical point of view
the last one , with difficult to understand , is generic.
the differences are very subtle indeed
