Passive form/help
Message from solas posted on 15-03-2016 at 16:41:05 (D | E | F)
Hi,
I've just taken one of the tests for the passive form.
One of the questions is to change the following sentence into the passive form:
People say that he was a hero during the war.
And it says the correct answer is: He was said to be a hero during the war.
I wonder if it should be
"He is said to have been a hero during the war" since people talk about him now(the present tense), not in the past.
Thank you.

Hello,
The answer 'He was said ...' is wrong; yours is correct since the verb 'say' in the main clause is in the simple present tense.

Hello,
I changed the sentence into
People said that he was a hero during the war.
The answer 'He was said ...' is correct now.

Solas, you should have used the button to report a mistake to get 5 points

Hello willy,
Thank you for answering my question, and I'm sorry for my late reply.
I haven't noticed that you answered my question since I didn't get any notice by email. I appreciate your kind explanation.

Hello,
I wonder why the question sentence had to be changed instead of its answer. Since people usually regard someone as a war hero after a war, I thought the original question was fine.

Hello,
It was technically easier to change the question
A hero is a hero whenever people say he was one. The date doesn't matter.
