Hello, You All, my Dear hardworking Friends!

Here is N° 97. I think it’s reasonably difficult with a few tricky idioms and the translation into French isn’t that easy… Once again, you’ll have to help my poor student who is planning a trip to England… It’s a and the correction will be online on Sunday, December 18th.
Of course, I give you THE FORCE to help you…

I) Translate into English:
1. Les indices atteignent des plafonds, et mon épouse travaille jusqu'à l'épuisement. Ce serait bien que vous puissiez la soulager d'un peu de stress.

2. « Je suis tombé sur Henry à la soupe populaire, hier. Il est sans abri, maintenant, et c’était bouleversant de le voir dans une telle misère … La dernière fois que je l’avais rencontré, il essayait de mettre de l’ordre dans sa vie. Que pouvons-nous faire pour l’aider à se remettre en selle ? » « Ca t’intéresse ? » « Oui ! Parce qu’il a traversé beaucoup de difficultés et qu’il mérite d’avoir une vie meilleure. »

3. Comment ? Vous me dites que l'on peut travailler à heures régulières même pendant cette crise ... Je n’y crois pas ! Où est l'entourloupe ?

Maxwell 4. Est-ce qu'on explique pourquoi on a changé de méthode ou bien c'est leur donner un bâton pour se faire battre ? - Tout bien pesé, je préfère qu'on ne se tire pas une balle dans les pattes. Tu sais bien qu'ils nous attendent au tournant et que ça se retournera contre nous...

Maxwell 5. Mon chef m'a passé un savon hier, soi-disant que le travail que je lui avais rendu, n'était "ni fait ni à faire", et qu'à cause de moi, cette tâche était sur le chemin critique.

You can sniff an atmosphere straight away, you know when something funny’ s going on. Off duty? Maybe, maybe not. I sat at a table by the window. The shower had turned into a downpour. A waitress with a strange, hounded look seemed only too pleased to serve me. Three tables along, a big man (Marco? – I’ll never know) was standing, towering over a girl who was sitting facing me but not looking at me, looking hard at her hands, one of which held a just-lit cigarette. The big man was speaking – under his breath but as if he might suddenly bellow – and she was ignoring what he was saying. He jabbed a finger towards the door. She wore a raincoat- unbuttoned, dry – but looked like she didn’t mean to budge. He wore a grubby T-shirt, a tea towel tucked into his belt.
She took a drag on her cigarette, blew the smoke quickly and straight up, tilting up her chin.
And I got it all straight away…

When I will arrive to the station, I hope anybody shall be here to welcome we. I amn't use to city and to take publical transports. Anybody was welcome me with poster in its hands, I lookt and lookt but can't see any sign with my name on one. I waiting and l growing worry and panic struck when sudenly, anyone touched me on the shoulder. He had a photography of me and acknowledged me by it. What releif!

Vous pouvez, immédiatement, ressentir une ambiance, vous savez quand quelque chose d’amusant va arriver. Pas en service? Peut être peut être pas. Je m’assis à une table à côté de la fenêtre. La douche dehors s’était transformée en déluge. Une serveuse avec un étrange regard traqué semblait très heureuse de me servir. Trois tables plus loin, un gros type ( Marco ?-je ne saurai dire) se tenait debout, surplombant de toute sa hauteur une fille qui était assise me faisant face mais qui ne me regardait pas, se concentrant sur ses mains, l’une d’elle tenait une cigarette venant juste d’être allumée. Le gros type était en train de parler-en contenant sa voix mais il pouvait hurler à tout moment- et elle ne prêtait pas attention à ce qu’il disait. Il pointa un doigt vers la porte. Elle porta un imperméable, déboutonné, sec- mais elle ne fit pas mine de bouger. Il portait un tricot crasseux, un torchon coincé dans sa ceinture.
Elle tira une bouffée sur sa cigarette, souffla rapidement la fumée, en relevant le menton.
Et j’ai de suite tout compris…

When I arrived to the station, I hoped that somebody was there to welcome me. I am not accustomed to cities and with public transports. Everybody was welcoming me with poster in hands, I looked and looked but couldn’t see a sign with my name on its. I was waiting and getting worried and panic struck me when suddenly, someone touched my shoulder. He had a photo of me and recognised me with it. What a relief!

NOBODY WELCOMED me with A poster in HIS hands, I LOOKED and LOOKED but COULDN'T see any sign with my name on. I WAS waiting, growing WORRIED and panic-STRICKEN when SUDDENLY, SOMEONE touched me on MY shoulder. He had a photography of me and acknowledged me by it. What A relief!

Et je captai toute la situation immédiatement

1 – Indexes are at their maximum and my wife is working to exhaustion. It would be nice of you to release her from some stress
2 – I bumped into Henry at the soup kitchen yesterday. He is homeless now and it was very moving to see him in such a poverty. The last time I met him he was trying to reorganize his life. What could we do to give him a boost ? Are you interested ? Yes, because he went through a lot of problems and he deserves to live a better life.
3 – What ? You are telling me we could have regular working hours even during this time of crisis.. I can’t believe it! Where’s the nasty trick ?
4 – Should we explain why we have changed our way of working or would it give them a stick to be beaten with ? All things considered, I’d rather we didn’t shoot in the foot. You know very well they’re waiting to catch us out
5 – My boss gave me a real telling-off yesterday, apparently I had handed him a ‘botched’ job and that because of me the task was on a critical way.

II – Into French
You can sniff an atmosphere straight away, you know when something funny’s going on. Off duty ? Maybe, maybe not. I sat a table by the window. The shower had turned into a down pour. A waitress with a strange, hounded look seemed only too pleased to serve me. Three tables along, a big man (Mario ? I’ll never know) was standing, towering over a girl who was sitting facing me but not looking at me, looking hard at her hands, one of which held a just-lit cigarette. The big man was speaking – under his breath but as if h might suddenly bellow – and she was ignoring what he was saying. He jabbed a finger towards the door. She wore a raincoat – unbuttoned, dry – but looked like she didn’t mean to budge. He wore a grubby T-shirt, a tea-towel tucked into his belt. She took a drag on her cigarette, blew the smoke quickly and straight up, tilting up her chin. And I got it all straight away…

Voici donc votre corrigé, nourri toujours de vos trouvailles et suggestions (et des miennes …) Je dois reconnaître que cet exercice, encore une fois comportait bien des difficultés et je vous félicite d’avoir tant et si bien travaillé pour les résoudre ! Vraiment BRAVO !

I) Translate into English:
1. Les indices atteignent des plafonds, et mon épouse travaille jusqu'à l'épuisement. Ce serait bien que vous puissiez la soulager d'un peu de stress.
The ratings are through the roof, and my wife is working herself into the ground/working herself past the point of exhaustion. It'd be great if you could alleviate some of her stress.

- atteindre des plafonds = to be reaching heights/ to be through the roof/
- travailler jusqu’à l’épuisement : ici, bien sûr, une petite résultative : to work oneself exhausted/ to exhaust oneself through work/ exhaust oneself at work/ working herself past the point of exhaustion/ exhausting herself working/.
- soulager du stress = to relieve of some stress/ to alleviate her stress/

2. « Je suis tombé sur Henry à la soupe populaire, hier. Il est sans abri, maintenant, et c’était bouleversant de le voir dans une telle misère … La dernière fois que je l’avais rencontré, il essayait de mettre de l’ordre dans sa vie. - dans une telle misère = in such destitution/ (pas d’article car « destitution » = mot abstrait. )/ such poverty/ such impoverishment/ Attention à « such misery » qui signifie souvent « une grande tristesse ».
- remettre de l’ordre dans sa vie = to bring order into one’s life/ to get one’s life together/. Attention ! “get my affairs/things in order,” = doctors’ code for “prepare to die”.
- Remettre en selle = to get someone back on track.
- Ca t’intéresse? = Are you interested? (pas de particule adverbiale derrière le participe adjectif ici, car il n’y a pas de complément d’objet). Comme il s’agit d’un intérêt qui s’applique à un humain, je préfère « Are you concerned ? » or « Do you care ? ».

3. Comment ? Vous me dites que l'on peut travailler à heures régulières même pendant cette crise ... Je n’y crois pas ! Où est l'entourloupe ?
What? You’re telling me that we can keep banking hours even during this crisis… I can’t believe it! What's the catch?

- Travailler à heures régulières = « aux heures de bureaux » = « keep banking hours »
- « une entourloupe » = a mean trick/ a catch (très répandu maintenant)

Maxwell 4. Est-ce qu'on explique pourquoi on a changé de méthode ou bien c'est leur donner un bâton pour se faire battre ? - Tout bien pesé, je préfère qu'on ne se tire pas une balle dans les pattes. Tu sais bien qu'ils nous attendent au tournant et que ça se retournera contre nous...

Shall we explain why we’ve changed methods or is it/does it come to/ digging our own grave? All things considered,/On balance/ I’d rather we didn’t stab each other in the back. You know that they’re catching us out and that it will backfire.

- Le début de la phrase était à la forme interrogative et il fallait poursuivre le parallélisme à la forme interrogative dans la 2e partie de phrase.
- Attention à la construction : « changer d’école » = to change schools (pas de « of » et un pluriel, parce qu’il y en a 2 (une avant et une après !)
- Là, Maxwell vous a gâtés avec une accumulation d’expressions idiomatiques (dont certaines très proches). Heureusement que l’on ne peut pas en employer autant à la suite au quotidien … Maxwell!
- donner un bâton pour se faire battre = / giving the stick to beat us with/ digging our own grave/ making a rod for our own backs
- Je préfère que = / I’d prefer us not to / I’d rather we didn’t…
- ils nous attendant au tournant = they’re catching us out/ keeping an eye on us/ expecting bad to happen/ expecting to meet problems.
- se retourner contre nous = it will backfire/ turn against us/ come home to roost.

Maxwell 5. Mon chef m'a passé un savon hier, soi-disant que le travail que je lui avais rendu, n'était "ni fait ni à faire", et qu'à cause de moi, cette tâche était sur le chemin critique.

- “funny” = drôle, amusant, mais aussi « étrange ».
- “On service” => ”off service” = en service – en pause; “Hors service” fait référence à autre chose … à une panne.
- Attention ! « I sat » = j’étais assis, je restais assis ; s’asseoir = to sit DOWN.
- “a shower” = une douche, une averse. Ici, il fallait mieux éviter « la douche ».
- to ignore = (très fort) ne pas vouloir tenir compte de ; ici, ne voulait pas écouter …
- L’imperméable déboutonné et sec prouvait qu’elle se préparait à sortir et n’avait pas « pris » la pluie. Elle ne voulait pas sortir sous un tel déluge, malgré le geste impérieux de l’homme lui montrant la porte. (Désolée pour le typo : bulge/budge ; bulge = en saillie, qui sort ;) bulging eyes = des yeux globuleux.

When I arrived at the station, I hoped somebody would be there to welcome me. I’m not used to big cities and to taking public transports. Nobody was there with a “poster” in their hands. I looked and looked around but couldn’t see any sign with my name on it. I waited and was starting to get worried and panic-stricken when suddenly somebody patted my shoulder. They had a photo of me and had recognized me thanks to it. What a relief!

- to arrive at a place; “to” indique un déplacement vers un lieu.
- Comme mes élèves ne sont pas anxieux, !!!, tout était pensé au passé de narration… mais l'anxiété ne me gêne pas, si elle n'est pas contagieuse !
- « anybody » = n’importe qui ; "somebody" = quelqu’un ;
- « here » = ici, proche ; "there" = éloigné = là-bas
- to be used to + V + ing = avoir l’habitude de.
- Attention ! « somebody » + V au sing ; « nobody » + V au sing mais sont repris par des pronoms PLURIELS. Les formes en –ing à « starting » et à « getting » montrent la durée (réelle ou ressentie) de l’attente et donc, l’inquiétude de l’élève seul qui attend d’être accueilli à l’étranger.
- panic-stricken = l’adjectif composé ; « struck by panic » convenait également.
- « To pat » = donner des petits coups/ « to tap » convenait aussi et même « to touch ». Pas de possessif devant les parties du corps en français (mais indispensables en anglais !)
- une photo = « a photo = a photograph. » « Photography » fait référence à l’Art de la photographie.
- “To acknowledge = to admit” = reconnaître, au sens d’admettre ; "to recognize/ recognise" = reconnaître physiquement.

Voilà ! Vous aviez raison … C’était difficile … mais vous vous en êtes très bien sortis, comme toujours !
